The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) attempted to launch the first H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center, but the solid rocket booster failed to ignite, resulting in a launch failure. JAXA is currently investigating the cause of the issue. The H3 rocket is a new flagship vehicle that replaces Japan’s mainstay H2A rocket after 29 years, and is expected to serve as the centerpiece of Japan’s space transportation for the next 20 years. The H2A rocket, Japan’s previous mainstay vehicle, is scheduled to retire after its 50th launch in FY2024.
